Cementitious Steel Fireproof Coating

• Intumescent fire-retardant coatings for steel structures are water-based, emulsion-type coatings composed of flame retardants, foaming agents, charring agents, and synthetic emulsions. When exposed to fire, they expand and foam to form a sponge-like carbonized layer, which prevents heat from being transferred to the substrate. These coatings offer excellent thermal insulation and fire-retardant properties; they are eco-friendly, pollution-free, and easy to apply, making them an ideal fire-protective and decorative material.
• Performance Characteristics:
- Thin coating with superior fire-retardant performance
- Rapid expansion upon exposure to fire, providing effective thermal insulation
- High bond strength
- Easy to apply
• Scope of Application:
Suitable for the fire protection of various steel components and load-bearing steel structures, such as spherical space frames, in construction projects. Typically used for steel structures requiring a fire-resistance rating of up to 2 hours, these coatings provide effective protection for beams, floor slabs, and roof load-bearing components in Class I buildings, as well as columns, beams, floor slabs, various light-gauge steel beams, and space frames in Class II buildings.
• Application Methods: Airless spraying, roller application, or brushing.
Product Description

Cementitious Steel Fireproof Coating for Steel Structures

Cementitious Steel Fireproof Coating from JOSME is an inorganic passive fire protection material blended with inorganic adhesive, refractory fiber, thermal insulation fillers and functional additives. It is mainly used for indoor steel structure projects that require a fire resistance rating of more than 2 hours. The product adopts a non-toxic inorganic formula without harmful volatile substances. It supports large-area spraying construction for commercial and industrial steel structures, including special-shaped structural components such as spherical grid frames.

What Is Cementitious Steel Fireproof Coating

Cementitious Steel Fireproof Coating belongs to sprayed fire-resistive materials (SFRM), serving as a passive fire protection system for structural steel.

Different from intumescent fireproof coatings, this product will not foam or carbonize in fire scenarios. It forms a solid and stable thermal insulation barrier to slow down heat conduction to steel substrates. Structural steel will lose nearly 50% of its bearing capacity when the temperature rises to 550°C. The inorganic matrix of this coating features low thermal conductivity, which can keep the steel temperature below the failure threshold during a fire.

This product fits engineering projects with fire resistance requirements of over 2 hours, which cannot be stably achieved by conventional intumescent coatings.

Key Performance Characteristics

Low Thermal Conductivity: Inorganic fillers and refractory fibres produce a solid insulating layer to minimise heat transmission in passive steel fire protection.

stable adhesion to substrate: the coating adhered strongly to the primed steel under seismic vibration and air erosion, and was steady in fire performance throughout long-term operation.

Long-Term Ageing Resistance: The all-inorganic recipe prevents the powdering and cracking that result from the ageing of organics, ensuring stable physical and protective properties throughout the life of the building.

Zero Harmful Volatiles: Non-toxic, pollution free formula with no VOC, suitable to spray on site and in occupied construction environments.

Low Surface Density: It provides good insulation and fire resistance without adding large amounts of static load to steel structures according to structural load design guidelines.

Typical Application Scenarios

This coating is ideal for applications with steel structures that require strict fire resistance standards:

High-Rise Commercial Buildings: Load bearing beams, floor slabs and roof assemblies requiring over 2 hour fire resistance per building code.

Large Public & Transportation Buildings: To postpone collapse of load bearing columns, steel beams and light steel structures in large density buildings to enable for safe evacuation

Special-Shaped Steel Structures: Spray spraying may cover difficult geometries such as spherical grid frames, providing a uniform coating that cannot be achieved by brushing or rolling.

Industrial facilities – for indoor steel constructions that require long term stable non-combustible insulation and fire protection during the life of the facility.

Surface Preparation and Application Process

Substrate treatment and standardised construction influence coating adherence and long-term stability. Actions.

Step 1 — Surface Cleaning Dust, grease, sundries and corrosion must be removed for a clean basis.

Step 2 — Rust Removal & Primer: Following rust removal, apply two anti-rust primer coats. Check for primer-coating compatibility and allow the first coat to cure thoroughly.

Step 3 — Base Coat Mixing Blend powder, binder and water at 100 : 3–5 : 90–95. Mix water and binder first for 2-3 min then add powder and swirl carefully for 5-10 min. Do not over-stir.

Step 4 — Base Coat Construction: Spray at 0.4–0.6 m distance and 0.6–0.8 MPa pressure; let dry 12–24 hours before next step.

Step 5 — Top Coat Construction Mix powder and water in the ratio of 100 : 90-95. Spray or trowel in 3-5 mm thick layers until the specified thickness is obtained.

Quality Control

All batches of Cementitious Steel Fireproof Coating adopt three-stage quality inspection to stabilize overall performance:

Incoming Material Inspection — Check the specifications and performance of raw materials such as inorganic adhesive, refractory fiber and thermal insulation fillers before production.

In-Process Monitoring — Track and record mixing ratio, particle uniformity and construction parameters during production.

Finished Product Testing — Retain batch samples to inspect color consistency, particle size and fire resistance performance, ensuring uniform product performance for bulk orders.

JOSME holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 50001 system certifications, as well as China Environmental Labelling Certification and China Green Product Certification. Test reports and complete export documents can be provided upon request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is the primary difference between intumescent and cementitious fireproof coatings?
A1: The principle of action of intumescent coatings is the principle of thermal foaming and carbonisation. Cementitious coatings are inorganic refractory systems that do not expand or deform. The coating provides stable insulation due to the low thermal conductivity, which makes it suitable for fire resistance over long periods of time.

Q2: What project scenarios apply?
A2:Steel structures for indoor use with fire resistance more than 2 hours, such as high-rise commercial buildings, big public facilities, industrial plants, spherical grid frames and special-shaped load-bearing steel components.

Q3: What are the construction advantages of this inorganic coating?
A3: No harmful compounds or volatile contaminants, which makes the site safer. Large area spray, suitable for complex steel structure, partial occupation.

Q4: Will it attack the substrate?
A4: It prevents steel from oxidising, and apply matched anti-rust primers as needed. To avoid hazards of corrosion, check primer compatibility before use.

Q5: Do you need a top coat?
A5: No, not for normal interior projects. A matching topcoat enhances moisture resistance and cleanability for high humidity or appearance-sensitive applications.
